Mumbere faces treason charges

The army declared the royal guard camps in the Rwenzori illegal.

The King of Rwezururu Kingdom, Omusinga Wesley Mumbere is to be charged with treason in connection with the instabilities that broke out in the Rwenzori region.

This follows his arrest on Sunday by police together with UPDF after a furious fight between the security personnel and his royal guards that were still hiding in his royal Palace.

Police spokesperson, Andrew Felix Kaweesi, said that Mumbere was flown to Kampala and they will carry out investigations to find out if he was the mastermind for this terror, he will be charged with treason.

Kawesi adds that the clashes between Police and the royal guards of Rwenzururu Kingdom led to the death of 60 people including 14 policemen.

Meanwhile, the army declared the royal guard camps in the Rwenzori illegal.

The UPDF 2nd division commander, Brig. Peter Elwelu, said the camps are used to plan attacks in the region.

He said the army shall continue with operations to guarantee security in the Rwenzori Region.
