Mbale Golf Club comes back to life

Nov 22, 2016

An open was last held in Mbale in 1993.

After 22 years of inactivity, Mbale Golf Club is set to come to life this weekend when it hosts the Mbale Open.

According to Johnson Omolo, a member of the club and who doubles as the Uganda Golf Union president, all the nine holes of the facility have been reclaimed from land grabbers, and the fairways are playable.

"The course fairways have been rehabilitated over the past 7 months with support from the R&A who donated a used gang mower and green mower," Omolo stated.

"This inaugural event is aimed at fundraising for the club to officially kick-start golf in Mbale, which has a rich potential for tourism due to the tourism features around the Elgon region."

The Liberty Life Assurance, Crown beverages (Pepsi), Wills Hotel sponsored tournament will attract keen golfers from across the country, in the medal format of play one-day tournament.

"We appeal to all those who love golf and have the sport at heart to grace this inaugural event. The course was on the brink of losing its current status for other use due to inactivity over 2 decades,"

"As a union we remain steadfast and committed towards promoting and developing golf in Uganda. We also plan to embark on renovating the Arua course where a new strategic partner has shown interest.  Masaka, Soroti and Masindi will follow suit in the near future. We also appeal to all likeminded individuals and corporate institutions to support development of the game in Mbale," Omolo appealed. An open was last held in Mbale in 1993.
