What your desk says about you

Whether you're a neat freak or a hoarder, your office décor is more telling than you might think

Does your desk at the office mirror who you are?  What do your co-workers think when they take a peek at your workspace? Whether you're a neat freak or a hoarder, your office décor is more telling than you might think.

Clear desk

Fred Musazi, a Human resource manager at Adiis Media says that a neat desk shows a careful and organized individual who is good at multi-tasking, flexible and creative in their approach to work. If the person has antibacterial hand washing and wipes, it means that they care about their health and are dependable.

Pictures of loved ones

Musazi notes that workers with pictures of their family members and friends tend to be focused and motivated by their loved ones. This is common with women.

"A framed family photo or two says something positive about your values. But keep the pictures current and limit their number. This is not your home office," said Musazi.

Flowers

Jane Nansubuga, an accountant at Peps enterprise says that people who have flowers on their desks are usually fashion gurus, easily motivated by poor working conditions and boring places.

Dirty

At some point in your career, you have probably glanced over at your cube-mate's workspace and raised an eyebrow at the pile of file folders, half-filled coffee mugs, and quickly-scribbled notes strewn across his or her desk. This kind of person might be the employee of the year but he/she is disorganized.

"It's worth a few minutes to make sure your desk is an effective envoy for your professional abilities," said Hassan Kalyango, a counsellor with Grace Healing Ministries, Gayaza.

Toys

Unless you work with children's organization or are a pediatrician, you do not have to put that Barbie doll on your desk. You are not a kid anymore.

Sticky Notes.

This is usually done by people who lack technology skills. The notes can make your desk to busy and you also get confused. So what happens when wind blows the paper? It is better to pull down the sticky notes and start compiling your lists on a computer and put calendar alarms.

Quotes

Quotes are cool and can be motivating in moderation, but aim them at yourself and keep them down to a couple of key inspirations.

Dorah Nakuguli, a communication specialist at C and C in Nakawa says that avoid quotes that could be targeting your boss. Just focus on inspiring yourself. Better not to look as if you need tons of motivational support to do your job," said Nakiguli.

How to keep your desk clean

  • Always put off old notebooks, they can attract cockroaches.
  • Do not eat at your desk, or else you will have rats.
  • Keep the incoming files in order.
  • Keep away used cups and plates. Do not keep polythene bags on the desk.
