EC to spend sh12b on election of village leaders

The finance ministry initially rejected EC's demand for sh37b

Ministry of Finance and the Electoral Commission (EC) have agreed on an outlay of sh12b to facilitate the election of village leaders and women councils.

This comes after officials from both entities while appearing before the Public Service and Local Government Committee of Parliament two months ago, failed to agree on this issue with EC demanding sh37b which the ministry claimed not to have.

This forced the legislators to order both government entities to organize a meeting with the Ministry of Local Government to pave a way for a joint solution on the matter.

Jotham Taremwa the EC spokesperson said that in the meeting, it was agreed that further amendments need to be made to the Local Government Act and the women council elections law to allow the EC to work within the new sh12b budget.

"We did propose areas to amend within the Local Government Act and the National Women's Council Act. The Ministry of Finance in principle agreed to finance if the laws were amended" Taremwa said.
