10,000 Teso households to grow sweet potatoes

Of the 10,000 targeted households, SSOSPA authorities confirmed that 6,000 households have so far been reached since the project started in May last year.

Soroti Sweet Potato Producers and Processors Association (SSOSPA) based in Kyere Sub County in Serere district has targeted to improve the growing of sweet potatoes of 10,000 households in Teso sub region in three years' time.

The farmers benefiting from this Seed Farmer Market and Consumer (SeFaMaCo) project are being trained on good agronomic practices and seed multiplication of mostly orange flesh sweet potatoes.

SeFaMaCo project which is being implemented by SSOSPA is funded by Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation through Farm Concern International.

Of the 10,000 targeted households, SSOSPA authorities confirmed that 6,000 households have so far been reached since the project started in May last year.

 

 

Silver Echabu the SSOSPA chairperson said, 82 selected villages in one Sub County in each of the districts of Serere, Ngora, Kumi and Bukedea will benefit from the project.

"We want household income to improve, to improve the eye sight, the shinning of the skin and the lives of malnourished children by eating orange flesh sweet potatoes which is rich in Vitamin A supplement," Echabu said.

This was revealed during the Commercial Village Trade Fair organized by SSOSPA in conjunction with Farm Concern International at Kyere sub county headquarters on Tuesday.

 

The trade fair was held under the theme "Profitable Smallholder Commercialization, Market Access and Trade Resolution through Commercial Villages Model; A Multi-Value Chains Scale Up Approach."

Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation is supporting SSOSPA to implement SeFaMaCo project with over sh167m for the three years.
