Nkumba University crowned beach soccer champions

The victory ensured that Nkumba (2015 and 2016) equals MUBS (2013 and 2014) record as the only team to have won the six year-old championship twice.

Charles Ayeko was left in shock on Sunday when Nkumba University came from 2 goals down in third quarter to retain the University Beach Soccer Championship at Lido beach in Entebbe.

MUBS led 5-2 up to the third quarter courtesy of Elvis Kasujja (hattrick) and team captain Frank Bomboka (brace). However, MVP of the tournament Roch Somoka helped Nkumba to equalize and take lead to win the sixth edition of the competition 7-6.

The victory ensured that Nkumba (2015 and 2016) equals MUBS (2013 and 2014) record as the only team to have won the six year-old championship twice.

"It was competitive but were not taken up with fear to lose or excitement to win. We kept focused and used our experience, that is why we won," Somoka said.

MUBS beat Bishop Stuart university of Mbarara 5-1 while Nkumba eliminated rivals St Lawrence8-5 in the semifinals.

Nkumba, MUBS, St. Lawrence, Bishop Stuart, KIU, YMCA Comprehensive University, Kyambogo, IUEA, Cavendish, Busitema, Busoga, Mutesa 1 and Multitech Business School competed in the two-day championship this year.
