Lost Children: Baby rescued from Kawaala latrine

Oct 01, 2016

The Police was able to recover a newborn baby, who was covered in maggots.

If someone in the Kawaala neighbourhood in Kampala had not gone to the latrines at about 7:00pm on July 9, this baby's life may have been lost.

Thankfully, a man did and heard a baby crying, which prompted him to call the Police for a rescue operation.

The pit-latrine was near Jesus Alive Church, Kawaala. The Police was able to recover a newborn baby, who was covered in maggots.

The Police rushed the baby to Mulago hospital, where he was treated and handed to Sanyu Babies'

Home in Mengo after two days.

Two months later, the Police has not yet found the mother.

Baby left on the bus

The Police are hunting for a mother who abandoned her baby on a bus around Nakivubo Bus Park in

Kampala on March 8. A conductor of a Global Coach bus said the baby, who looked severely malnourished and sickly, was found sleeping on a seat between 8:00pm and 9:00pm, after all the passengers had disembarked.

The bus had come from Mbarara that evening. Nobody ever returned to claim the baby.

Old Kampala Police took the baby to Mulago hospital for treatment since he was in bad shape.

He is now at Sanyu Babies' Home. Barbara Mutagubya, the director of the home, says the baby was named Abel.
