Gulu attack: Five more suspects remanded

It is alleged that on May 27th, 2016 the accused attacked Opit Army Detach in Gulu district

The General Court Martial has remanded five more people over their alleged involvement in the recent failed attack on Army Detach and Central Police Station in Gulu district.

On Monday, Robert Okot, Karim Bidongu, Patrick Komakech, Ema Munguriek and Vincent Olara were arraigned before the General Court Martial chaired by Lt. Gen. Andrew Gutti and charged with treachery and offences relating to security.

They denied the offences. This brings the number of the suspects to 17.

L/Cpl Simon Mugisha, Pte. Akina Ophine Kasamba alias Jaimoro Opio Nickson, Collins Agenurwoth Odori, Vincent Maditrowth and Kakonick Lukwiya are among those earlier remanded over the attack.

Others charged are Richard Okech, Alfred Odongpiny, Geoffrey Komakech, Charles Onen, Richard Onen alias Munu Opegu, Opio Thomas Opiyo, Vicent Ochola Ocen alias Okema and Pte. Fred Okidi Opio Layika.

Prosecution led by Maj. Raphael Mugisha informed court that inquiries in the matter are still ongoing, prompting Gutti to adjourn the case to October 19th for further mention.

It is alleged that on May 27th, 2016 with intent to prejudice the security of the country, the accused intruded and attacked Opit Army Detach in Gulu district.

The state further contends that on June 12th, the same group with the same intention attacked Central Police Station in Gulu District.

It is also alleged that on May 27th this year, with malice aforethought, the suspects unlawfully caused the death of Pte. Alphonse Ojara Odongo and Haggai Okullo at Opit Army Detach in Gulu.

The accused also face alternative charges of murder of two soldiers at the detach, two police officers at Gulu Central Police Station and causing grievous bodily harm to four other people.

Prosecution alleges that on June 12th, the suspects with malice aforethought unlawfully caused death of Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Amos Masaba and Cpl Amos Edema at Gulu Central Police station.

It further alleges that between May 27th and June 12th, 2016, the accused also unlawfully caused grievous bodily harm to Pte. Dickens Obong and detective Assistant Inspector of Police Jackson Yochira, Sgt. Vincent Kibuye, Pte. Michael Opoka Kilama, Police Constable Watimango Sande and Christine Ally at Opit Army Detach and Gulu Central Police respectively.
