Kabanda, Mirembe fate for September 2

Aug 26, 2016

Justice Vincent Okwanga postponed the ruling to next Friday because it was not ready.

The High Court in Kampala will on Friday next week decide whether or not the current Butambala Woman MP Lydia Mirembe was validly elected.

In a notice seen by New Vision on Friday, Justice Vincent Okwanga postponed the ruling to next Friday because it was not ready.

According to the notice, the judge has been diagnosed with fever for the past two weeks, making him unable to finish writing the judgment.

However, the development angered Aisha Kabanda and Mirembe's supporters and attempted to demonstrate at the court until the police dispersed them.

Kabanda, also the former Kampala Resident City Commissioner (RCC) who contested for the seat and lost to Mirembe, filed an application at the civil division of the High Court in Kampala challenging the election of Mirembe.

She is arguing that there was mass vote rigging and most of her votes were mistaken to be invalid by the electoral officials especially in Budde sub-county.

At first, Kabanda petitioned the Mpigi Chief Magistrate's Court requesting for a vote recount but Mirembe petitioned the High Court which stayed the exercise.
