Suspended police Commanders face new charge

Police prosecutor Katherine Kusemererwa told the tribunal chaired by Senior Commissioner of Police (SCP), Denis Odongpiny that although the case was coming up for court to determine whether or not to put the accused on defense, she had amended the charge sheet.

THE four suspended police commanders have been charged with another count of neglect of duty while dispersing Dr. Kizza Besigye's supporters in July this year which damaged the police reputation before the public.

Police prosecutor Katherine Kusemererwa told the tribunal chaired by Senior Commissioner of Police (SCP), Denis Odongpiny that although the case was coming up for court to determine whether or not to put the accused on defense, she had amended the charge sheet.

"I have amended the charge sheet where by the commanders now face an alternative count of negligence of duty," Kusemererwa said.

She later submitted the amended charge sheet to court prompting commissioner Odongpiny to read new charge to the accused. They all denied the charge.  

The commanders are: former Wandegeya DPC Moses Nanoka, former Kampala South RPC Andrew Kaggwa, former Field force commander Samuel Bamuzibire and former Field Force Unit commander in charge of Katwe Patrick Muhumuza.

They are currently battling unnecessary use of force alongside seven others at the police disciplinary tribunal seating at Naguru.

According Kusemererwa, the quartet in their capacity as commanders failed to stop officers from beating up people while dispersing Besigye supporters who were expressing joy to him after his was temporarily released from remand at Luzira prisons by the High Court.
