18 suspects in murder of Muslim clerics freshly charged with treason

Eighteen people out the thirty two, currently battling charges of murder of Muslim clerics at the International Crimes Division in Kampala have been freshly charged with treason.

On Wednesday, the suspects including Dr. Aggrey Kiyingi's sister-in-law Aisha Nakasibante,32, were produced amid tight security before Court presided over by Nakawa grade one magistrate Christine Nantege and charged with two counts of treason.

However, after the Magistrate read the charges to them, she did not allow them to take plea on grounds that the court lacked jurisdiction to hear the case.

"I will not ask you to tell court whether each of you committed the offences. My court has no jurisdiction to try capital offences like the one you are facing. After Investigations, I will send you to the High Court to take plea on the offences" Nantege ruled.

Others accused includes jailed Tabliq leader Sheikh Muhammad Kamoga's brother  Murta Mudde Bukenya, Badiru Bukenya, 27, Amir Kinene, 38, Hakim Kinene Muswaswa, 24, Muzamilu Kasawuli, 24, Arafat Serunjogi alias Bukenya, 30, Alex Okot, 44, Joseph Olanya alias Onekmon, 23, Charles Okidi, 28, Pte Arajab Mubaje alias Sulaiman Magombe, Issa Matanda alias Charles, 39, Hajji Abdul Ratif Byamukama alias Tumusiime, 24, Asadu Ssemwogerere,30, Solomon Kibirige, 23, Safiyi Wadwali, 44, Yusuf Ssentamu, 37,Muhammad Kaloddo alias Kasibante, 44 and Ismail Ssentongo, 41.

State prosecutors, Thomas Jatico and Rachael Bikhole told court that investigations in the case were complete and asked court for a shorter adjournment to prepare the committal papers to send the accused to High Court to face trial.
