The World Youth Day brings together youthful Catholics from all over the world to reflect on their lives, to pray and to discover their vocation and ministry in the world.  The festival is not only about prayer though, pilgrims also get to visit sites of cultural and historical importance, compete in friendly games, eat, drink, play and laugh together.

The highlight of the World Youth Day Festival 2016 was a prayer vigil with The Holy Father, Pope Francis.  It was a sight to behold, a sea of people, each with a candle in hand, gathered for a prayer vigil with Pope Francis at twilight on July 30th, near Krakow.  They were a multitude too numerous to be counted. The press put the numbers to over 1.5 million people. Somewhere in the crowd were 128 Ugandan pilgrims who travelled to the festival.

Joyce Zako, the National Youth Coordinator at the Catholic Secretariat coordinated the visit of Ugandan pilgrims.  "The World Youth Day serves to strengthen and rejuvenate young people in the Church to be effective followers of Christ. "Jesus Christ is the centre of the World Youth Day," she said. The Next World Youth Day will be held in Panama.
