Secondary schools in Nwoya receive text books

Under the project, they have selected four districts of Pader, Amuru, Nwoya and Katakwi

Secondary Schools in Nwoya district have received text books worth sh30m from the United Movement to End Child Soldiering Centre (UMECS) for Peace, Education and Development.

The text books which include Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics, English Literature, Geography and Fine art were given to Purongo Seed Secondary School, Anaka Secondary School, and Alero Secondary School.  

The Executive Director of UMECS Centre for Peace, Education and Development, Charles Onencan said the donation was under the project, support books for Africa where they are distributing books, for applied science from their development partners in USA.

He added that under the project, they have selected four districts of Pader, Amuru, Nwoya and Katakwi which they have donated the books to schools that lacked text books or have no library.

Onencan said in Pader they distributed the books to Lagwai Seeds SS and Pajule SS, in Amuru they donated to Pabbo comprehensive SS and Blessed Jildo Irwa and Okello SS and in Nwoya they donated to Purongo Seeds SS, Anaka SS and Alero SS.

"We donated these text books to enhance educational teaching for learners so that they revise and improve on their academic performance," Onencan noted.

"We are building culture of peace, transforming youth through educational scholarship to vulnerable children and fostering community development" Onencan said.

Nwoya County MP, Simon Oyet said he liaised with UMECS Centre for Peace, Education and Development to donate text books, to build the capacity of the newly created secondary schools with teaching materials.

 

"Northern Uganda is in the process of rehabilitation and reconstruction and one of the key aspects is human resource development through quality education to prepare them for future," he remarked.

"I will continue to lobby for more scholastic materials like text books, scholarship programs to empower and support students to improve education in Nwoya so that they continue with their education and compete with other students from other parts of the country" Oyet said.

He appealed to the head teachers of schools to make proper use of the books by giving them out to students to read them.

Oyet urged students not to steal the books, but read and return them to the library so that other students can also use.

Jenifer Grace Apio Owiny, the acting head teacher of Alero Senior Secondary school said the text books donated will also help the teachers in their professional development.

She added that the books will help students in learning since they do not have text books in their school library.

"This will help students revise science books that are essential and compulsory. We have for long been lacking these books here," Apio said.
