The Uganda Institute of Banking and financial services (UIBFS) has released the May 2016 results of banking and microfinance examinations for professional bankers.

A total of 185 professionals from different banking institutions and those intending to join the institution sat for the examinations and only 11%(20) of them failed.

Out of the 185 that sat, 58% were females and 42% were males.

UIBFS conducted four sets of examinations which include; Banking Certificate (BC), Certified Professional Banker (CPB), Diploma in Microfinance (DMF) and Certificate in Credit Management. The setting and marking of the examination is moderated by Fellows of Chartered Institute of Bankers, London.

Examinations were conducted in ten centers including Kampala, Gulu, Arua, Mbale, Mbarara, Hoima, Fort-Portal, Jinaj, Juba and Kigali.

Speaking during the announcement of the results, Anthony Mulindwa, chief executive officer, UIBFS said majority passed highly with 89%, but 11% failed completely.

"These courses are not easy, they need intense preparation, however, most of the students that sat are already employed somewhere, and had limited time to prepare for the final exams, this is one of the factors that could have predisposed some students to fail," he said.

He also said that the 11% that failed the exams will have no alternative but to do retakes.

Comparing this year's performance with last year's, Mulindwa said the overall performance for this year improved.

The overall performance for May 2016 posted an overall pass rate of 89% compared to an overall pass rate of 86% for November last year.

However, there has been a decline in the number of students that sat this year. Last year, 192 students sat while this year 183 sat for the exams.

Diploma in Microfinance and Certificate in Credit Management, were the best done, followed by Certified Professional Banking and banking certificate was the worst done.

A total number of 76 students who have completed their courses will be graduating in October this year.
