In a bid to revive competitive boxing locally, Uganda Boxing Federation (UBF) has organized a national league this month.

The event that has so far drawn interest from 15 clubs, gets underway on November 30 at Lugogo.

UBF secretary Simon Barigo said the championship would help the federation ignite boxing in upcountry areas like Mbarara, Bombo and Jinja.

These venues will play host to some engagements.

The championship that will involve boxers in the both senior and youth categories runs up to October.

"We are optimistic that this league will help us ignite more competition locally. It will also help us expose more local talent," he said.

Due to limited competitions, most boxers rely on a few competitions like the National Opens, Cadets and Junior championship.

Top clubs that have shown interest in the event include East Coast, Katwe Combined, Zebra, COCAP, UPDF, Kampala Boxing Club, Africa Sport, Mengo Social and Police.

The teams yet to confirm participation are Lukanga Boxing Club and KCCA Boxing Club.

The championship is facilitated by National Council of Sports (NCS), according to Barigo.
