Besigye bail hearing in treason case deferred over Eid

The hearing has been pushed to July 11th to pave way for the celebrations

Former Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) president Kizza Besigye's bail application in the treason trial, which was to be heard Wednesday, has been deferred.

According to a communication from the judiciary communications officer, Solomon Muyita, since the hearing was slated to take place on the same day Muslims are to celebrate Eid, it has been pushed to July 11 to pave way for the celebrations.

He revealed that the Nakawa District Coordination Committee (DCC) the framework of institutions  in the criminal justice system, will on Thursday morning visit Luzira Prisons, police detention facilities and the Naguru remand centre to assess the detention and remand standards of suspects, including Besigye.

The DCC will be led by its chairperson who is also the Chief Magistrate of Nakawa Court, James Ereemye.

Besigye applied for bail on June 7th on grounds that he was of advanced age and was a law abiding citizen who would not abscond court once released.

He argued that he had substantial sureties and is entitled to bail.

Justice Wilson Musene of the High Court then set June 6th to hear the submissions.

Meanwhile, Besigye released an Eid Mubarak message from prison wishing Muslims happy celebrations.

In his message dated he recognized the contribution of the Muslim community to the country.

"Uganda Muslims are known for more than their generosity, they make an invaluable contribution to our country, from education, hospitality, healthcare, business, sports to political leadership," read his message in part.

He also urged them to, during the feasting and celebrations, reflect and also celebrate the values that make them Ugandans.
