Police in Kalangala rescued a 26-year-old man from a mob that wanted to lynch him for allegedly defiling a 3-year-old baby.

Julius Maseruka, a resident of Lutoboka landing site allegedly committed the offence on Sunday in the absence of the girl's mother Beatrice Nyinamugisha.

Nyinamugisha had reportedly gone to the garden when the incident occurred. She had left the girl under Maseruka's care who allegedly took advantage and defiled the girl.

On her return, Nyinamugisha found the girl bleeding excessively and rushed her to Kalangala Health Centre IV for urgent medical attention.

The girl later identified the perpetrator who was pursued by the residents who attempted to lynch him.

They said that about three other cases have been reported about the same suspect but police had no records to confirm the allegations.

Richard Musisi, the Kalangala District Police Commander, confirmed the incident saying the suspect is already in custody at Kalangala police station.

He explained that they will arraign him in court following conclusive investigations into the matter.

However, Maseruka denied the allegations saying he is a victim of circumstances due to the fact that the girl was left with him.

He further appealed to residents to always be vigilant and report such crimes to the police to handle than taking the law in their hands.
