Parliament has approved the appointment of Dr. Ruhakana Rugunda as Prime Minister.

Last week, President Yoweri Museveni named the new Cabinet

The House chaired by Parliament Speaker, Rebecca Kadaga, overwhelmingly voted in favour of a motion moved by government chief whip designate Ruth Nankabirwa. 262 MPs were in favour of the motion, 3 against and 4 abstained.

Contributing to the motion earlier, Uganda People's Congress (UPC) president Jimmy Akena hailed Rugunda's leadership.

"The only problem that people bring out about Dr. Rugunda is that he is too good," he said.

"Rugunda stands for all people, despite their political affiliations and beliefs. Despite his long stay in the public service, it is hard for people to say negative things about him," Akena added.

Nankabirwa described Rugunda as a great thinker, forthright and not up to intrigue. "This does not mean he is complacent and gullible," she noted.

Dokolo county MP Felix Okot Ogong hailed former president Dr. Milton Obote for identifying, grooming and mentoring Rugunda.

Rugunda was born in Kabale, studied in Kigezi High School and then Busoga College Mwiri.

He attended Makerere University and later the University of Zambia, where he graduated as a medical doctor in 1975.

He also holds a Masters in Public Health, specialising in maternal and child health from the University of California (1978).
