Ordering Spenkon to remove the soil and restore the wetland to its original state was the punishment

Hillary Mugabi the Spenkon driver who was arrested by Wakiso residents for degrading Kasangombe wetland was set free without any disciplinary action.

Wakiso wetlands officer Stella Nalumansi said Mugabi was released because the company he works for responded to the condition set which was to remove the soil Mugabi had poured in the wetland.

After the removal of the soil, Mugabi was released together with the truck on the very day the offence was committed.

According to Nalumansi the wetlands officer of Wakiso district, ordering Spenkon to remove the soil and restore the wetland to its original state was the punishment and if they had left the soil for over 15 days the law would have taken its course.

She however said that some measures have been put in place to prevent people from encroaching on Kasangombe wetland and this includes, securing pillars to demarcate and show the boundaries of the wetland.

However, by the time Mugabi was arrested, there were many more people who had already degraded the place and doing business in the wetland uninterrupted.

The business there is mainly sand selling and there are two areas with heaps of sand and trucks collecting it on a daily basis and one wonders why this is going on.

Nalumansi added that the issue has been forwarded to the Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) Dunstan Yiga Mukasa to see that those occupying Kasangombe wetland are removed but he also referred it to the RDC Ian Kyeyune.
