Onyango eyeing PSL award ahead of Cranes duty

May 30, 2016

Ongango will have to beat Moeneeb Josephs and Shuaib Walters

PSL Awards (SS4, 9.30pm)

Zimbabwe v Uganda (Tuesday)

Botswana v Uganda (Saturday, 4.50pm)

Denis Onyango is highly tipped to claim the Absa Premiership Goalkeeper of the Season and Telkom Knockout Player of the Tournament honours during the annual Premier Soccer League awards at Emperors Palace in Kempton Park tonight.

And if the Ugandan goalkeeper wins both awards, it will earn him a combined (250,000 rands) sh52m.

The Absa Premiership Goalkeeper of the Season award comes with R50,000 (sh10m) while the Telkom Knockout Player of the Tournament cash prize is set for R200,000 (sh42m).

For the goalkeeping prize, Ongango will have to beat Moeneeb Josephs and Shuaib Walters. He will then have to contend with teammates Thabo Nthete and Bongani Zungu for the Telkom prize.

Onyango, who will be celebrating a decade in South Africa next month, has collected a combined six trophies (four league titles and two cup titles) during his stints with SuperSport United and Mamelodi Sundowns.

The 31 year-old will be expected to regroup with the rest of the Cranes team in Harare, Zimbabwe tomorrow—hours before their friendly against the Warriors.

Cranes will utilize the build-up to assess the fitness levels of every member of the 23-man squad before deciding on who will start in the make-or-break Nations Cup qualifier against Botswana.

Cranes, who are joint leaders in Group D alongside Burkina Faso, must beat Botswana this Saturday and Comoros in September to guarantee qualification for the finals in Gabon among the two best second-placed teams in the event that Burkina Faso also win their last two matches.
