Catechists and Christian teachers under the Catholic Church have been asked to behave responsibly within their communities to avoid tarnishing the image of the church.

"How do you expect people to respect you when you are drunk and shabby? You must walk the talk like our saviour Jesus Christ. You must show love, kindness, and visit and pray for the sick. Love one another to be examples in communities," the Archbishop of Kampala, Dr. Cyprian Kizito Lwanga said.

He said this during the celebration of St. Andrew Kaggwa Kahwa's day, at Munyonyo martyrs' shrine on Wednesday.

Kaggwa is considered as the Patron of catechists and Christian teachers in the Catholic Church-Uganda.

Kaggwa, was killed in Munyonyo together with St.Dennis Sebugwawo and St. Posiano Ngodwe on May 26, 1886 by the then Kabaka Daniel Mwanga, after refusing to denounce their Catholic faith.

Kaggwa is said to have converted to Catholicism and baptized on April 30, 1882. He served as a religious instructor and converted many others.

The day is also celebrated as part of the activities ahead of the Uganda Martyr's Day celebrations on June 3.

Lwanga noted that Catechists are key in promoting the doctrines of the church, saying they need to emulate their patron in all aspects.

The event was celebrated by hundreds of the catechists, teachers and other catholic believers from five dioceses of Kampala, Masaka, Mityana, Lugazi and Kasana-Luwero.

"You must be strong in your faith as catechists and Christian teachers to safeguard our religion and doctrines like your Patron St. Andrew Kaggwa," Lwanga added.

St. Kaggwa's day also coincided with the celebration of 50 years of Kampala Archdiocese, since its creation in 1966.

Lwanga attributed the growth in faith and membership to the dedicate clergy and religious, and the hard work of the catechists.

"The life of the church depend on you because you bring babies and adults to the waters of baptism; prepare the little ones for Holy Communion and Confirmation," he added.

Others who attended the event are retired Bishop Mathias Ssekamanya (Lugazi diocese) and his predecessor Bishop Christopher Kakooza. Ends
