Police impounds 70 boda bodas in operation

At police most of the cyclists who followed up their boda bodas pleaded guilty of the offences and begged for forgiveness

Police have impounded 70 boda bodas in Rubaga division Kampala district in an operation they carried out on Monday morning.

According to Old Kampala police Officer in Charge of traffic Ruth Kyobutungi, the operation was aiming at curbing boda boda cyclists who do not follow traffic rules in the division.

"The operation was aiming at curbing cyclists who defy traffic law," she said

The close to seven hour operation was staged at pride theater junction Namirembe road and ran from 6:30am to 1:15pm.

Kyobutungi added that police was targeting cyclists riding without helmets, those carrying more than one passenger, those without driving permits and other qualifications.

By the end of the operation, there were no any arrests as police could confiscate motorcycles and take them to police.

At police most of the cyclists who followed up their boda bodas pleaded guilty of the offences and begged for forgiveness.

In 2009, Police announced a crackdown on boda boda cyclists and their passengers who are not wearing helmets.

In the same year, police said that passengers who will be caught on boda bodas not wearing helmets will be subject to a sh20,000 fine or one month in prison or both.
