Court bans Besigye processions

Neither Besigye nor the FDC lawyers were in court. Attorney general Mwesiga Rukutana represented Government.

The Court of Appeal has this evening issued an interim order barring Kizza Besigye, the Forum for Democratic Change or any of his agents against organizing any procession or carrying on with the defiance campaign until a Constitional case that was filed by Government was determined.

Deputy Chief Justice Steven Kavuma issued the order against the FDC Kizza Besigye and his agents against holding demonstrations, planned processions scheduled for 5th May or any other day pending the hearing of the Constitutional application No. 017 of the 2016.

Neither Besigye nor the FDC lawyers were in court. Attorney general Mwesiga Rukutana represented Government.

FDC Deputy Secretary General Harold Kaija on Monday announced that the party was set to hold a 'peaceful demonstration' on May 5, challenging the election of President Yoweri Museveni. The procession was supposed to be held to be held a week to the swearing-in of President Museveni on May 12 starting from the FDC offices in Najjanankumbi to Nakivubo blue Primary School.

The order will stay in place for 4 weeks. (more details to follow shortly).
