Today in History: UPC leads in the National Assembly elections

Preliminary results indicated the Uganda People’s Congress (UPC) was heading for victory during the National Assembly elections.

April 25, 1962 - Preliminary results indicated the Uganda People's Congress (UPC) was heading for victory during the National Assembly elections.  The party was also relying on the Kabaka Yekka (KY), a Buganda based party on account of being in alliance.

So far UPC had won four of the six seats in the urban constituencies in the National Assembly elections. The other two seats went to DP. In Jinja South, the former Minister of Commerce and Industry Mr. C.K Patel contesting as an independent was defeated by DP candidate Mr. M.K Patel with 672 votes. The only woman candidate in the election, Mrs. Gertrude Mbabule (UPC) lost the Jinja South.

The Buganda Lukiiko nominated 21and all were members of KY including Mr. J.T Simpson, chairman of the Uganda Development Corporation and Mrs. S. Visram to the National Assembly. This was through the indirect slot provided for under the constitution.
