Bishop Odama advises graduates to serve with humility

This was during the 13th Uganda Catholic Management and Training Institute (UCMTI) and 21st Graduation extension Uganda Martyrs University ceremony on Friday.

The Archbishop of Gulu Diocese, John Baptist Odama has advised graduates to serve with humility and in harmony so as to add value to society.

In his speech read by the bishop of Nebbi Diocese, his Lordship Sanctus Lino Wanok, Odama lamented that people have become selfish, lost sight of the importance of humanity, and are easily corrupted in search for success and wealth, which has left the world in turmoil.  

This was during the 13th Uganda Catholic Management and Training Institute (UCMTI) and 21st Graduation extension Uganda Martyrs University ceremony on Friday.

"We have leprosy eating up our society, and this is greed for money. Each of us has been infected by the leprosy, people have become money minded and lost sight of the value of friendship and love for one another explaining why the world is in turmoil," said Odama.

He added saying, "we need to focus on serving humanity, without humanity, there is no need to go serving. In some instances, lives have been lost because some people do not have money to pay. As you go into the world to work, go serve everybody in equal terms because everyone is important, do so with humility and in harmony without despising anyone, serve people diligently, with joy to create an impact."

The event started with mass led by Lordship Sanctus Lino Wanok as the main celebrant and took place at UCMTI main offices in Rubaga on Friday.

 It was under the theme "Integrating market oriented educational programmes and ethical values.

A total of 339 graduands were awarded certificates and diplomas of these, 273 were female and 66 male.

They were awarded diplomas and certificates in fields of Business Studies, Humanities and Hospital studies including, Food Science and Nutrition, Hotel management institutional catering and tourism, fashion design and interior decoration, social work and social administration, Travel, tourism and hospitality, Bulk Petroleum Logistics Management among others.

Others were certificate in records and information management, certificate in Marketing and Sales management, diploma in Adult and Community education, diploma in Ecological Organic Agriculture, diploma in Gender and Development studies among others.

Sr. Dr. Spevanza Namusisi, acting deputy vice chancellor, Academic Affairs, asked the graduates to put to good use the skills they obtained during the time of training.

"You have acquired the desired skills in the workforce today, put these skills to good use, go into the world and make a difference. Do not engage in unbecoming behavior like corruption, protect mother earth for peaceful existence," said Namusisi.
