'We'll get back to women soccer internationally'

In 2013, FUFA withdrew its women team from all international competitions.

FUFA president Moses Magogo believes the national women football team will be ready for international competitions after hosting the CECAFA championship for later in August.

Magogo said that after hosting championship featuring Kenya, Tanzania, Rwanda, Burundi, Zanzibar, South Sudan, Sudan, Somalia, Djibouti and Eritrea, the women team would have gauged itself well enough to go beyond the region.

In 2013, FUFA withdrew its women team from all international competitions - at a time the Uganda U-20 national team had ejected South Sudan 22-0 on aggregate -, citing lack of grassroots development in the local women football.

But while handing over a second consignment of football equipment from global soccer governing body FIFA, Magogo said that, "after creating the league, we have 400 girls playing football every week. We believe we are now able to create the elite end of women football".

"Right now we can select a national team from clubs in the league. We want to get back to continental football next year. Our target is the 2020 World Cup in Jordan," added Magogo.

Although the kits that included playing T-shirts, gloves, playing boots was meant for 12 teams, all the 16 clubs in the FUFA women's league received it.
