Over 500 bananas stems and fruits were razed by the stormy winds.

Banana farmers in Logiri sub-county in Arua district are counting loses after heavy winds destroyed large chunks of their plantations on Sunday.

Logiri subcounty is currently the food basket of the northern Uganda district.

According to Kefa Ondoma, one of the affected farmers, over 500 bananas stems and fruits were razed to the ground by the stormy winds.

Arua district agricultural officer, Gertrude Badaru attributes the incident to the effects of climate change.

She appeals to farmers to plant trees that act as windbreaks in order to avoid such vagaries of nature.
