Election of speaker slated for May 19

Mar 14, 2016

We have agreed that the NRM parliamentary caucus will convene on May 18 to decide on who will be the next speaker - Peter Ogwang, NRM parliamentary caucus vice chairperson

As the political contest for the speaker begins to take shape with two major contenders Rebecca Kadaga and Jacob Oulanyah clandestinely courting NRM lawmakers, the party has set May 18 as the date for the NRM parliamentary caucus to select a candidate for the job.

Peter Ogwang, the NRM parliamentary caucus vice chairperson said that the 301 newly elected NRM gathered at Kyankwanzi for a one week retreat will not debate the issue of next speaker but rather concentrate on the orientation of these members and also equip them with the political dimensions before the 10th parliament begins in May.

"We have agreed that the NRM parliamentary caucus will convene on May 18 to decide on who will be the next speaker. The elections of the speaker will be held on May 19, according to the parliamentary programme," Ogwang said.

President Yoweri Museveni is today evening expected to open the retreat at the National Leadership Institute, Kyankwanzi.

Government Chief Whip, Ruth Nankabirwa told New Vision that during the one-week retreat, the 301 lawmakers would be grounded in ideology, legislative practice and the principles of political pluralism.

Programme highlights:

Overview of the comparative performance of NRM in 2016 elections by secretary general Kasule Lumumba.

Role of patriotism in building Uganda today by Lt. COL. Henry Masiko.

The political economy of Uganda by Col. FRED Mwesigye.

On Tuesday, March 15, President Yoweri Museveni will return to Kyankwanzi to lecture NRM MPs on understanding goepolitics, regional intergration and national interests.

New Vision CEO, Robert Kabushenga and Uganda Media Centre director, Ofwono Opondo will on Friday (March 18) lecture MPs on how to handle the media and communications
