The registration of non-unionized workers in Kampala over the weekend, failed to kick off, after many workers who had turned up for registration at different divisions, remained stranded with no officials to register them.

When New Vision visited some of the divisions such as Nakawa, Lubaga and Makindye on Saturday, workers were found waiting with no one to attend to them.

"I have been here since 9:00am, but there is no one to attend to me, the whole thing was done hurriedly we were only informed about this exercise on Friday," said Betty Kazibwe a non-unionized worker found at Lubaga division.

At Nakawa division, non-unionized workers were found stranded, with no one to attend to them for registration. Some of the workers, who were tired of waiting, were seen leaving the division headquarters without being registered.

On Friday, the ministry of Gender, Labor and Social development issued a statement urging workers to participate in elections for workers' MPs.

In the press statement, the ministry invited all willing non-unionized workers to go for registration at their respective sub-county headquarters.

"All willing un-unionized workers are accordingly requested to register at their sub-county headquarters between 7:00am and 1:00pm," the ministry stated.

Last year, Parliament amended the scope for the workers' Electoral College that elects workers' MPs to include workers who don't belong to workers' unions (non-nnionized workers).
