Al Shabaab Intelligence boss Killed

The Uganda Peoples Defence Force Spokesperson, Paddy Ankunda confirmed that the KDF had struck the Al Shabaab base in Somalia and that Mahad was among those killed. “His death is a major boost to the AMISOM forces in their fight against terror,” Ankunda said.

 

AL SHABAAB intelligence Chief Mahat Karatey, 10 others have been killed.

A statement released by the Kenya's Ministry of Defence indicated that the Karatey was killed after Kenyan forces serving under the AMISOM attacked Nadris camp between Buale and Sokuw on February 8, 2016.

"Mahad Mohammed Karatey aka Mahat Karatey the Al Shabaab Deputy Commander and overall head of the Alamnyat (Al Shabab Intelligence wing) and 10 other middle level commanders were killed in a major KDF strike on the Nadris camp between Buale and Sukow," the statement read.

According to the statement from the KDF, Karatey had gone to the camp to preside over the passing of an estimated 80 Alamnyat recruits who had completed their training and were due for deployment to carry out more terrorist attack.

42 recruits were also killed while many others injured.

The Alamnyat is the Al-Shabab intelligence wing comprised of suicide bombers, assassins, explosive experts, and information gathers. The KDF statement said that the killing of the overall commander was a major blow to the terrorist group.

Karatey has been instrumental in planning major attacks on the Amazon forces. He planned the September attack on Ugandan peacekeepers in their base in Janaale, 55 miles (90km) southeast of the capital Mogadishu. 

His most recent mission was the attack on the KDF forces in El Adde where he deployed suicide bombers. He becomes the second most senior Al shabaab commander to be killed after Abdi Dek the operation commander of the Zubeir Brigade that carried out the attack against the KDF forces.

Karate, also known as Abdirahim Mohamed Warsame, was responsible for the recent attack on Garissa University College in Kenya that resulted in nearly 150 deaths.

The U.S. Department of State had designated Mahad Karate under Executive Order 13224, which targets terrorists and those providing support to terrorists or acts of terrorism. As a result of this designation, all property subject to U.S. jurisdiction in Karate has any interest is blocked and any assets they may have under U.S. jurisdiction are frozen. U.S. persons were generally prohibited from engaging in any transactions with Karate, or to their benefit.
