CAF Champions League

Preliminary round: First leg

Vipers SC 1 Enyimba 0

Return leg: February 26

Erisa Sekisambu struck in the second half as Vipers SC got a crucial CAF Champions League win over Enyimba at Nakivubo on Friday.

The Cranes striker got the Enyimba defence flat footed after a Keziron Kizito assist to shoot past goalkeeper Theophilus Afelokai.

The burden is now more on the Nigerian side to pull off a big win in the February 26 return leg in Aba Abia.

Vipers could have taken an even better cushion to Nigeria if Ssekisambu hadn't blown an open chance two minutes before his goal.

Afelokai failed to cool Mike Mutyaba's shot. Sekisambu pounced on the resultant rebound but shot over to the disappointment of the big home crowd.

But it was the two-time African champions in charge in the first half, coming close thrice.

Joseph Osadiaye, Peter Onyekachi and Christian Pyagbara had clear chances but fired wide with goalkeeper James Alitho at their mercy.

Should Vipers progress, they will play either Lesotho's Lioli or Vital'O from Burundi in the first round.

This was the first time the Buikwe-based side was representing the country on the continental stage.

In 2010, Vipers were supposed to take part in the Champions League but pulled out citing financial constraints

On Saturday, SC Villa will also be in action in the Confederations Cup against Sudanese side Khartoum Watani.
