BACKGROUND:

WWF (World Wide Fund for Nature) is a conservation organization established in 1961, with over 5 million supporters and a global network active in more than 100 countries. WWF's mission is to stop the degradation of the planet's natural environment and to build a future in which humans live in harmony with nature, by:

• Conserving the world's biological diversity,

• Ensuring that the use of renewable natural resources is sustainable, and

• Promoting the reduction of pollution and wasteful consumption.

Pursuant to its global mission, WWF Uganda Country Office (UCO) works with the Central and Local Government agencies, private sector, Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) and the local communities to implement its various conservation programmes on energy and climate, forest and biodiversity and freshwater in Uganda. WWF UCO, with support from a cross-section of partners selected Kasese District, to pilot an initiative that was to culminate into energy access for all within the district in what is now commonly referred to as the Champion District Initiative (CDI).
