President Paul Kagame has appointed Maj Gen Jacques Musemakweli as the Army Chief of Staff of the Rwanda Defence Forces.

He replaces Lt Gen Frank Mushyo Kamanzi who is currently in Sudan where he, last month, assumed his duties as the Force Commander of the AU-UN Hybrid Mission in Darfur (UNAMID).

RDF top brass includes a Chief of Defence Staff, Army Chief of Staff, Air Force Chief of Staff and Reserve Force Chief of Staff.

A statement released by the Ministry of Defence yesterday also indicated that Maj Gen Alex Kagame had been appointed as Commander of the Republican Guards, replacing Musemakweli.

Maj Gen Alex Kagame, who has hitherto been the 4 Division Commander, returns to the Republican Guards which he headed several years ago.

The statement also said that Maj Gen Richard Rutatina had been dismissed as the Forces' J2 (head of military intelligence).
