President Museveni delivers on hoe pledge

While meeting locals in Terego in November last year, the communities told President Museveni that they were keen to cultivate food but lacked hoes

Government on Monday launched a countrywide distribution of hand hoes in fulfillment of President Yoweri Museveni's promise to provide 18 million hoes to 6 million households across the nation.

The launch took place in Terego County, Arua district and was presided over by Prime Minister Dr Ruhakana Rugunda. He was accompanied by the Minister of Agriculture Tress Buchanayandi, NAADS executive director Dr Samuel Mugasi, the permanent secretary Office of the Prime Minister Christine Guwatudde Kintu and Arua district leadership.

Speaking during the colourful function attended by many people, Dr Rugunda said President Museveni is a leader who keeps and fulfills his promises.

While meeting locals in  Terego in November last year, the communities told President Museveni that they were keen to cultivate food to feed their families and improve their household incomes,  but lacked key inputs such as hoes. At many of his campaign rallies in the area, the President then promised that Government would provide the tools.

"We are pleased to be rolling out this national program of providing this key farm implement today, starting from Terego,  Arua district," Rugunda said.

Rugunda said the hoe is key tool that is used by the majority of Ugandans, and that it complements mechanised farming using tractors.

"Most of us are here today because of the hand hoe. We used it to grow crops for food and for sale. There is no contradiction to modernisation of Agriculture. The hoe is very important" he added.

A release from his office stated that the Prime Minister also used the occasion, wearing his hat as a member of the NRM Central Executive Committee to drum up support for President Yoweri Museveni and NRM party flag bearers for the forthcoming elections.

"Without a doubt, come 18th February, all votes from here should go President Museveni and the NRM flag bearers to ensure that the country continues on the path of steady progress."

Earlier, while meeting the district leadership, Dr Rugunda hailed Arua for being a shining example of a well-functioning municipality.
