Police in Amuru and Koboko districts are holding two South Sudanese nationals accused of selling two military pistols and six rounds of ammunitions.

The suspects are Deng Bul, 22; and Moses Koul, 24, who are residents of Nimule in South Sudan.

The duo was arrested by police after selling a blow pistol to George Okema at Sudanese pounds equivalent to sh130,000.

According to police spokesperson Fred Enanga, the buyer over the weekend tipped police who swung into action, arrested the suspects with their military hardware and detained at Elegu police station in Amuru district.

"On January 28, at around 10:30pm at Elegu market in Atiak Sub County in Amuru, police acting on a tip off arrested two nationals of South Sudanese who were selling a blow pistol serial number T6111203 loaded with six rounds of ammunitions," Enanga said.

Enanga added that similarly also in January at Rupoli village, Oraba parish Kuluba Sub County in Koboko district, a South Sudanese national Elly Taban was arrested with a star pistol.

Police alleges that Taban, who was found with a star automatic 8mm pistol, had come to sell it in Uganda.

"He was in company of two others who ran back to South Sudan with two SMG rifles and two pistols," Enanga said while addressing the press of Monday at Naguru Police headquarters.

Enanga said the police have been trying to track down the dealers for about three months following a tip-off from civilians in Uganda about peculiar dealings between some South Sudanese and certain Ugandans.

He added that this was the seventh time in a space of one year that South Sudan nationals are arrested in northern Uganda in possession of weapons.

"Arms trafficking along the border with South Sudan is becoming common. Ugandan security operatives are working together with their counterparts in South Sudan to curb illegal activities along the porous border," he noted.

Enanga the suspects will be charged with being in illegal possession of military ware.
