Uganda fighters to take part in US Open Taekwondo

The fighters together with coach Ahmed Bamuwayira departed for a 10-day training stint in Colorado on January 20.

Ugandan martial artists Royson Okwera and Oswaldo Ocira will take part in the US Open Taewondo Championship that gets underway on Wednesday.

The fighters together with coach Ahmed Bamuwayira departed for a 10-day training stint in Colorado on January 20.

"This is a very big opportunity which we have been longing for. We are ready for the challenge," Okwera said.

Okwera, 16, and Ocira , 14, have used the Colorado training to familiarize themselves with the electronic scoring system.

Ocira will feature in the cadets category of the event while Okwera will compete in the senior category of the meet that is expected to involve over 30 countries.

Coach Bamuwayira who has been handling the two artists at Uganda Sports Children's Academy in Acholi Quarters in the Kampala suburb of Mbuya promised good results.

"This is a very important engagement for us. The training was good. I hope all goes well," he said on e-mail on Monday.
