Former Olympian boxer Atanus Mugerwa is to contest for the Rio Games during the National Open Boxing Championship this month.

The former undisputed bantam weight who has been in Sweden, is among the veteran boxers who are currently loading punching power ahead of the premier event that will determine the national team-the Bombers.

Mugwerwa who is currently training at Lukanga Boxing Club in Najjanankumbi says his ambition is to qualify for the Rio Olympic Games.

"I have beaten many European boxers. I believe I have got more experience for the Olympic Games. I am ready for the challenge," says the boxer who is to weigh in the featherweight category.

The entry of Mugerwa is likely to spice up the competition for places in the National Open due on January 25-31 at Lugogo.

The solid puncher has weight problems in the bantam category. After climbing to the featherweight category, Mugerwa says he can ‘comfortably tame' any challengers.

Mugerwa is likely to take on Marvin Mpiima, Vincent Lukyamuzi in the featherweight category of the annual championship.

According to Uganda Boxing Federation (UBF) secretary Simon Barigo, the best boxers in the event will earn berths on the national team.
