Stampede as volleyball transfers get underway

The 2016 volleyball season rolls off with the transfer window where women clubs appear to be more active than their male counterparts.

Ndejje Elites women have moved to get back KAVC star Saidat Nnungi after a season away, while Sport-S have gone for the 2014 Women Player of the Year, Peace Busingye.

Women's reigning champions Ndejje Elites will on the other hand, retain their winning team captain Christine Alupo, maturing setter Winnie Nakabuubi and Kenyan turned Ugandan Belinda Jepkirui, to avoid snooping clubs. All the clubs offer the players either jobs or further education.

Nakabuubi, Jepkirui and Alupo, who were expected to leave after their graduation from Ndejje, have been offered jobs at the institution in a bid to retain their services.

"We want the top four places at the continental tournament (CAVB), not quarterfinals this time," Ndejje coach Johnson Kawenyera said.

"With Nnungi back and senior players remaining with us, we look at making bigger strides on the continent."

Although Busingye featured for Kampala International University (KIU) at the just concluded University Games in Iganga, VVC owner Hannington Nsubuga is not aware she has moved.

"To us it is still a rumour since the player has not approached us on the same but I also know that she is on a sports scholarship. We have a team meeting this week to establish who wants to leave or stay so that we lay our strategies," Nsubuga said.

In the men's transfer, KCCA veteran player Hassan Sekajoolo could neither deny nor confirm rumours linking him with VVC men's club.

"I am not going to be a KCCA player anymore. My reign that started in 2000 ended December 2015," Sekajoolo said.

"I am proud of my success and failures at KCC-KCCA. I have both management and playing options. I have many offers, which I am studying."
