In efforts to reduce the rampant road accidents and indiscipline, police has vowed to go back to their old method of taking offenders to court to be charged.

Police claims that most of the accidents are due to reckless driving and indiscipline of motorists.

The director, traffic police, Dr. Steven Kasiima said many drivers are habitual offenders, committing similar offences, because they can afford paying the Express Penalties (EP).

"Some people do not care about these penalties because they can afford. Because of this, they continue breaking traffic regulations," he explained.

"We are now going to emphasize court action for such offenders. It appears the EP scheme is not punitive enough. We want to subject them to court a process where fines are much higher," he added.

Kasiima said they are going to ask court officials to give custodial penalties to such people.

The director, traffic operations, Norman Musinga, stressed that some motorists are just stubborn and can only adhere to the law with the use of an iron hand.

"We shall continue using the EP to those who are not habitual offenders and ready to comply with the law. Those who are stubborn will be taken to court," he added.
