The Minister of Agriculture, Tress Bucyanayandi has advised farmers not to plant now saying the season is advanced.

“If you plant now you may not have enough rain to sustain the crops to maturity,” Bucyanayandi said on Thursday.

He was, however, quick to add that unless if a farmer is planting crops like beans, but not maize or sorghum.

Currently, various parts of the country are experiencing torrential rains, leaving many areas flooded.

The Uganda National Meteorological Authority together with the IGAD Regional Climate Application and Prediction Centre and the World Meteorological Organization in a report recently confirmed that Uganda and other East African Countries would experience an El Nino episode from late October 2015 to February 2016.

The El Nino is expected to cause flooding, extensive erosion and mudslides with loss of lives, destruction of homes and food supplies at varying levels in some districts.
