It is that time of the year when athletes start eyeing a special Christmas package.

The package comes in form of cash prizes from the MTN Kampala Marathon.

The top ten fi nishers in the men and women’s 10, 21 and 42 kilometre events all walk away with prize money.

The biggest of these is sh14m that the two winners of the 42km races will earn on Sunday.

UPDF’s Alex Chesakit pocketed the money last year for winning the men’s race.

Carolyne Migadde won the women’s prize.

Another Ugandan soldier Francis Musani who was second in the men’s race earned sh7m. Policemen Joshua Chemutai who followed got sh3.5m.
Getting a similar amount in the women’s category were Jane Suuto and Kenya’s Gladys Jeregat in second and third position respectively.

This year’s MTN race will also serve as a qualifier for the world half marathon championship due next year in Cardiff, Wales.

Proceeds from the MTN race will this year go towards improving health in Kampala’s public schools. Previous editions had proceeds going to provision of clean water.

Uganda’s leading media house Vision Group, Huawei, Stanbic Bank, Rwenzori and National athletics body UAF have again partnered with MTN to organise the marathon.
