UGANDA People’s Congress Jimmy Akena has defended his talks with President Yoweri Museveni arguing it is for the good of all political stakeholders and the entire nation.

“I can confirm that we are in talks whereby the core minimum agenda addresses key issues like health, education and agriculture that will guide all engagements over the next 5 years,” he explained.

Addressing a press conference in the company of other party leaders, Akena said, “As UPC we firmly believe in the need for a peaceful transition and recognize that this could only be the last term for President Museveni and therefore any meaningful discussion on transition cannot exclude him and NRM.”

During a press conference on Saturday at Baralegi State Lodge in Otuke district, President Museveni said he was having fruitful discussions with the UPC group led by Akena.

“It is true that UPC, led by Jimmy Akena, who is the official president of the party, is talking with us in a responsible way. I appreciate the UPC stand. They are standing as UPC candidates but they have also said they would support my candidature” he said.

The Lira municipality MP argued that his engagements with President Museveni are in line with UPC’s founding spirit of preservation of national unity and integration.
