Ugandan athletes will have to contend with new faces of foreign athletes in the MTN Kampala Marathon.

A field of 19 athletes from Kenya and Tanzania had entered the elite 42km category on Thursday.

Kiprop Tonui of Kenya leads the cast which includes two Tanzanians in a hunt for the lucrative cash prizes in the annual event.

Other foreign athletes entered include Barnabas Kipyego, Mohamed Msenduki (Tanzania), Josephat Kibet Chesumbai and Julius Kiptoo Kibet.

The visiting women entered in the 42km race include Rael Kimaiyo, Doris Jepchumba Totophus, Pamela Anisomuk of Kenya and Fabiola William John of Tanzania.

The elite athletes always take centre stage in the marathon which is by far the biggest sporting and social event in Uganda. Registration officially opens on Tuesday at various centres in Kampala.

Ugandan athletes enjoyed the fruits of their sweat last year with Alex Chesakit winning the 42km category while compatriot Caroline Migadde stole the show the women’s category.

Nathan Ayeko won the 21km event while Zeddi Jerop of Kenya won in the women’s bracket.

Last year’s event drew over 20,000 participants in a race which saw proceeds of sh450m being channelled to safe and clean water provision for the people of Karamoja.

This year’s marathon whose theme is “Together let us support KCCA to improve sanitation in public schools around Kampala” starts and ends at Kololo Ceremonial grounds.

The annual event is organised by MTN and Uganda Athletics Federation in partnership with Uganda’s leading media house - New Vision, Huawei, Stanbic Bank and Rwenzori Water.
