National team golfer Ronnie Bukenya goes into this week’s national team trials in buoyant mood after winning the 19th edition of the Kinyara Open on Sunday.


The scratch player from Lugazi Golf Club returned 146 gross over two rounds to beat another national player; Kilembe Golf Club’s Happy Robert by two strokes, and another eleven handicap 0-5 golfers to the annual championships.

Bukenya opened his round with three-over-par 74 before sealing the win with a one-over par 72 on the second day, to win his second championship of the year, having won the Tororo Open earlier this year.

“I was beaten to this title by Willy Kitata last year but this time I came with a target of scoring 149 but thank God I have won by less,” Bukenya who was competing at the nine-hole course for the second time said, after receiving his trophy and double door fridge from Kinyara Sugar General Manager Ravi Ramalingam.

Home boy Chris Basaliza was second runners up in the gross category, with other Kinyara golfers Andrew Oketi and Simon Ojobile dominating group B of the handicaps (6-12).

Jimmy Mwesige, Nelson Ayiko and Edgar Muzahura were the best in group C while John Bosco Edema, Mace Mutto and Kennedy Byaruhanga topped group D (HC 19-28).

Palm Valley’s Merom Kyomugisha was also a class above in the ladies category winning on 156 nett.

Earlier Brian Mwesigwa had claimed the biggest share of sh10m in the professionals’ category.

Sponsors’ representatives from ICEA (Sam Mweru) and LIAISON (John Karionji) promised to make the event that attracted 72 golfers even bigger next year.
