The leadership of ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) in Kampala has asked the military to join Police in securing party’s primaries starting on Monday.
Kampala Central NRM chairman, Salim Uhuru told Sunday Vision that they made the appeal during one of the meetings they held on Thursday at the party’s offices in Kyadondo.
Uhuru said that during the meeting they resolved that for the good of the party’s image, the military should work with Police to stop anyone causing the violence.
The recent campaigns in the NRM primaries have been riddled with violence including in Kampala. In the spate of violence, supporters of rival camps fought one another, leaving dozens injured.
The Monday polls are expected to even attract more violence as some candidates will be fighting to edge out their opponents.
Uhuru said he will be very active in causing the arrest of the perpetuators of hooliganism and violence.
Police deploys in hotspots
Police spokesperson, Fred Enanga told New Vision that they have gathered intelligence reports ahead of the primaries in which they have identified hotspots and deployed mobile teams accordingly.
Enanga said that the teams Police have deployed constitute officers from different units in the force who should be able to respond to violence any time it breaks.
Some of the hotspots Police have identified include Kampala, Mbale, Katakwi, Bundibugyo, Butaleja, Katakwi and Busoga areas.
