SAJEKI International Scrabble Championship sponsors have vowed to increase the prize stake for the coming edition on condition that a local participant wins the championship next weekend September 12-13.

SAJEKI Agency’s Country Director John Byenkya made the remarks during a press briefing held at their offices in Kampala.

"Scrabble is a game that still deserves recognition and we thought that the only way to attract more local participants is through raising the prize money and that's only if they win," he said.

The winner at the third edition that will be held at Ministers Village Hotel in Ntinda next weekend will walk away with sh1.5m.

The prize money was raised from (sh1m) last year after Uganda's seed one Edwin Mugisha beat former champion Gitonga Nderitu from Kenya to the title.

SAJEKI is currently the only sponsor Scrabble Association of Uganda (SAU) has managed to secure in the past two years and the association publicity secretary David Onai is confident that the continued partnership is likely to attract more participants.

Onai said that they expect over 50 participants from Uganda, Kenya, Rwanda and Gambia to take part at the two days event that recently qualified to be among internationally recognised world ranking tournaments.
