UPDF in charge of safety at Pearl of Africa Rally

The Uganda Peoples defence forces (UPDF) will be in charge of safety in this year’s Pearl of Africa Uganda Rally due next month August 15-15 in the Luwero district.

The Uganda Peoples defence forces (UPDF) will be in charge of safety in this year’s Pearl of Africa Uganda Rally due next month August 15-15 in the Luwero district.

The move is aimed at helping the police to fight terrorism and control crowds that turn up for the rally events to avoid accidents that cause death.

The national motorsport governing body (FMU) president Jack Wavamuno disclosed this yesterday at Shell Lugogo during the Launch of the Pearl of Africa Uganda rally where Vivo Energy committed a sh100m sponsorship to the 522km event.

“We are taking safety very serious and we are this time involving UPDF and they have agreed to give us to two choppers as for surveillance during the event,” Wavamuno stated.

Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIGP) Andrew Serowen echoed further that the police will arrest drunken fans that drive carelessly in the road in excitement of the rally.

“The game of rally is loved in Uganda but during that excitement we get many accidents a thing we shall not accept in this event.  And we shall even go for those drunk fans driving,” Serowen stated.

“I will actually be in those areas that fans are not allowed to stand and be sure that everything is safe,” Serowen Stressed.

Vivo energy Managing director Hans Paulsen promised his company’s continued support of motorsport on condition that safety is observed.

“As a company we have a vision of being the most respected fuel company in Africa and our motto is we go zero harm to people. It is from this that we shall continue supporting FMU but there must be safety,” Paulsen stressed.

The Shell V-Power pearl of Africa Rally is co-sponsored by Silver Springs Hotel, Fire and Safety appliances and Zion Estates.
