39 suspected thugs arrested in Masaka

Police in collaboration with concerned locals launched a major operation to crack down on the rampant theft and other crimes

At least 39 people suspected to be criminals were on Monday arrested from different communities around Masaka district.
 
Police in collaboration with concerned locals launched a major operation to crack down on the rampant theft and other crimes in Masaka town, Nyendo, Senyange, Kimaanya and Kyabakuza division.
 
The operation follows constant public outcry over crimes such as rape, aggravated robberies, assault, burglary, arson, marijuana smoking among others.
 
According to Henry Kavuma, the District Police commander, the operation was mainly targeting suspected marijuana smokers, dealers plus shop and housebreakers, and other crimes in Masaka business community.

He said that two brothers including Sayidi Paneamu and Ramathan Sseguya both residents of Kataffaali village in Kimaanya-Kyabakuza division were arrested for crimes like theft, marijuana dealing and other related crimes.
 
Kavuma explained that the two brothers have eluded police for a long time until when they went out of luck this time.
 
He added that they managed to recover tools used in breaking doors and padlocks, dry and processed marijuana and master keys from the suspects' homes and hideouts.
 
However, 11 of the suspects were street children. They were separated from adults and put in a different cell at Masaka police station.
 
Kavuma said they were found sleeping on verandas of houses and shops in Nyendo town.
 
Asked about the next plan for the minors, Kavuma said that they trying to identify their families so as to reunite them with their parents and guardians.
 
He said that the rest of the suspects will be produced in court any time on various charges after conclusive investigation.
 
The suspects denied the allegations saying they were innocent. But police opened up a file against them on SD/04/14 as investigations continue. 
 
The operation is still on and will last for the whole month of July.
