Malawi national football team have held the Uganda Cranes to a goalless draw in an international friendly at Mandela National Stadium in Namboole on Tuesday.

Cranes dominated the friendly meant to prepare both teams for their Africa Nations Cup qualifiers on Saturday but failed to convert their chances confirming the team’s inability to turn their chances into goals.

Strikers Geoffrey Massa, Brian Umony and Yunus Sentamu failed to impress.

But for coach Micho Sredojevic, the friendly which arguably gave the Cranes a formidable challenge ahead of Saturday was an eye opener. It was Cranes second warm up game in seven days. Last week Cranes defeated Seychelles 1-0 in Kampala.

Tuesday result left the handful fans, who watched the match at Namboole downcast but Micho insists he will fix the deficit in time.

“We defended well, created a number of chances in both halves but failed to convert our chances. It is a general problem which I cannot say I’m happy with. The good thing is that we have some time before Saturday and we can change,” Micho said a post-match interview.

Uganda play Mauritania at Namboole while Malawi head to Benin in the second round of the qualifiers.

The winner of the second home and away qualifier between Uganda and Mauritania joins Ghana, Togo and Guinea in Group E.

At the group stage, the games will be played on home-and-away on round-robin basis. The winners and runners-up of each group will be joined by the best third-placed team for the Africa Nations Cup finals.
