President Yoweri Museveni has urged the people of Gomba district to emulate the example exhibited by model farmers in their area in order to effectively fight poverty and improve their household income.

The President was addressing a rally at Kajumiro Mosque grounds in Kajumiro village of Maddu Sub-County on his second day tour of model farmers in the area.

Museveni, who had earlier braved heavy rain during his assessment tour in Sembabule district to check on the progress made by model farmers, toured the farms of Mr. Serwadda Bonny,  Mr. Hakim Katumba and that of Mr. Bashisha Paul all of Kisozi village in Kabulasoke Sub-County in Gomba district.

Mr. Museveni also visited the farm of Mr. Talindika Stanely of Kirasi village as well as that of Mr. Mukiibi James of Kajumiro village all in Maddu Sub-County.

Addressing a rally in Kijumiro after the tour, the President told wananchi that their request for facilities like tarmac roads and electricity was good.

He however, reminded them that the infrastructure was for public but on individual basis, wananchi should concentrate on household income generating activities that will help them get out of poverty.

Museveni advised them to follow the example of the few model famers who are now engaged in modern commercial agriculture and are reaping comfortable income.

He reiterated his advice to families with small pieces of land to grow coffee on one acre, fruits on another, food crops on the 3rd one and elephant grass on another acre.

He said at the back yard, a family can rear chicken for eggs, pigs for non-Muslims, produce onions, tomatoes, mushrooms and engage in apiary.

Commenting on their concern about lack of drugs in health facilities, Museveni pledged to stem the smuggling of medical drugs from Uganda to a neighboring country.

He also pledged government’s commitment to construction of community valley dams in order to address the challenge of lack of water in the area.

The President commended a Canadian couple, Mr. and Mrs. Ron Lynn Vanin from Global Missions, for constructing a hospital in Kajumiro and pledged to ensure that the facility gets electricity.

Addressing the same rally, the Minister of Education and Sports, Hon. Jessica Alupo, said construction project of a girls’ dormitory and another for boys worth Shs.1.8 billion, has already kicked off at Kisozi Seed Secondary School by her Ministry.
Cabinet Ministers, Gomba district and religious leaders, among others, attended the rally.
